Have you seen the EAT sign in Courteney Cox's kitchen on Cougar Town?
I've seen many great versions and wanted to try my own. At first my plan was a mod podge treatment, with either fabric or pretty paper. Here's a great tutorial I found using mod-podge and paper.
After I saw this, I knew I wanted a metal look instead.
Click that link to see how she made that great light. That table? A lamp and an old coffee table. Genius!
Then I saw this amazing kitchen,
That's the name of the blog and what I said when I saw her kitchen!
Subway tile to the ceiling folks! Love. It. I think her letters are the real thing. Mine are paper mache, so I had to go about making them look like zinc.
Here's a great tutorial on recreating Anthroploogie's (very pricey) Zinc letters.
That is pretty much exactly what I did and came up with this
Anthropologie's comparable sized letters are $18.00 a piece. Mine were $2.47 a piece at Hobby Lobby + a little paint I already had.
Cheaper and better. Love them. I adore those curtains too.

I LOVE these letters! I have been eyeing them at Anthropologie, but I refuse to pay the $18 a piece. I will definitely try this, they look so realistic! Thanks for the tutorial!
I'm new at this whole linky thing, and I followed your tutorial from Layla's blog. Please visit my new blog- burlapandlaceblog.blogspot.com and let me know what you think!

Found you at the lettered cottage. Love the letters- I'm gonna have to make some as soon as I can find some letters in my neck of the woods! I'm a new follower.

Natalie, they are a little more pricey that what you typically find at IKEA, but they are nice and heavy and lined. I think you will be happy with them.
Thanks for stopping by!

Sorry I think I missed the part about where you got your letters? I want to do this concept for my girls room. Did you say you made your letters or can I buy them somewhere and then paint them? thanks! Love all your ideas and tutorials. I just recently swapped all my kids rooms to give my oldest son his own room, so now I am doing makeovers in three kids rooms!

Hi!
Wow, three makeovers! Sounds like fun : )
The letters came from Hobby Lobby. They were paper mache and were around 2.50 each. I spray painted them black before doing the faux zinc treatment.

Hi. I love what you did with the letters. Just one question though, what are the colors and the kind of paint you used to get that zinc effect? Would really love to know so that I can also try this at home. Thanks!

Hi Beth,
After spray painting the letters black, I used acrylic craft paint to achieve the zinc look. The colors I used are Metallic Taupe and Metallic Sterling Silver. I also used a little orange- very little, just to give a slight look of rust in a few places. The key is to brush the paint on very lightly in one direction, then dab it with a paper towel to soften the lines, but not enough to remove the lines. Just keep layering paint on and dabbing it off till you are happy with the look.
Hope this helps.

Have you thought of spraypainting your blinds? Maybe a dark gray so they blend with the black door, or a pearly pale version of one of the curtain colors?
Posted by: Cathie | March 10, 2011 at 01:39 PM
No I hadnt thought of that. Surprising since I paint almost everything. But now that you mention it. I may just try that. I wonder how the bamboo texture would look gray. Hmm...... you have my mind turning. Thanks for the suggestion!

I think the name is Stockholm Blad in green. They also have them in a more neutral tones as well as a blue I think. They come long so you can hem them to whatever length you require. They include fusible hem tape in the package in case you dont require to sew.
