I'm still wreaking havoc in the kitchen. I got all the walls and trim painted white. I took the doors off one of the upper cabinets and started putting vinyl in the back. Then I ran out of vinyl. Drats. Here's what I've got so far.
I also managed to sweet talk Mitch into painting the doors in the kitchen black.
Why did I photograph the door from this angle?
I was trying to photograph this guy.
Meet Willie, my new grand-pup. Alyssa got a new baby, the four legged variety. Isn't he a sweetie?
OK, did you enjoy that bit of sweetness? Back to the kitchen insanity. Why not do some closet demo while were at it?
I have a pantry that I really hadn't been using as a pantry for some time. It had really become the closet equivalent of a junk drawer.
So, I pulled everything out, and piled it on every flat surface in my kitchen. Nice.
That blue box up there has the topper from my wedding cake. I've been married 23 years. Do I really need to keep the topper from my cake?
Pretty, huh? Just wait till you see the inside of the closet.
Those big holes are from removing the wire shelving. It's outta here. The dirt, well I have no explanation for that, other than the fact with all that junk, who could see the dirty wall?
I'm happy to say it has been cleaned and painted and will be getting newly painted wood shelving.
Soon, I hope.
I'll be back later this week with a few more projects I've been working on.
I'm very excited to be contributing to pillow month at Sew Mama Sew.
LOVED this weather today! I'm afraid it is short-lived, though. Thanks for the info on the cabinets. We have an indoor, long-haired, gray cat that will probably rub up against the black. But that's ok, we love him. :o)
I've looked for the oil rubbed bronze spray for a while. It must be really popular these days, as the stores are always out. I'm going to look online next.

Hi! I just found your blog through sew mama sew and can't wait to read through it! I am in the process of picking paint for my kitchen cabinets and wondered what kind of paint you use. I've painted cabinets before and generally use high gloss kitchen paint but wonder if there is something better to keep the cabinets from chipping? Thanks for any thoughts.

Hi Beth. We used oil based paint for the cabinets. My husband sprayed the doors and I rolled/brushed the bases. Oil paint is a pain to work with and takes forever to dry, but when it does, it provides a harder more durable finish. That said, I am going to have to repaint the top cabinets because apparently oil based paint yellows over time. I have done some research online and plan to use Ace Hardware cabinet and trim paint.
It gets really good reviews and claims to give an oil finish with latex paint. It is supposed to be self leveling, showing very little brush strokes. I will have to prime the cabinets first, since you cannot paint latex over oil, but since Im just doing the uppers, I dont mind. I will definitely post about how it works out.
There is also a paint made especially for cabinets that does the same thing as the Ace brand, it is called Cabinet Coat and it gets good reviews as well. I went with the Ace, but from what Ive read, both are good choices for cabinets.

have you done a tutorial on painting your cabinets before? I know your husband sprays alot of them right? But I was wondering how you paint the inside stuff like cabinets? My cabinets need new paint, so HELP please?

Cindy,
I did do a post on painting cabinets cabinet painting 101, but I think another may be in order. I plan to repaint my upper cabinets because in the year since I painted them, they have yellowed. Something Ive since learned about light colored oil based paint.
I have purchased a paint called Cabinet and Trim paint by Ace Hardware. If you do a google search you can find lots of info. It is supposed to deliver a hard durable oil like finish but in a latex paint. It is also supposed to be self leveling, leaving very little brush strokes.
When I repaint the uppers, I will be sure to take lots of pictures along the way.
As far as painting the insides, I just cut in all the edges with a good brush (purdy is my fave) and roll the rest. Use a good primer first. Something like Kilz or bullseye by Zinser so that the paint will adhere.
