I am and I love it! Pinterest is essentially an on-line inspiration board. A place to pin and catalog all the things you love.
Not only can you catalog your loves, you can see what your friends are pinning, cause Lord knows, we need to know what our friends are up to. (said with a bit of sarcasm) I like Facebook, really I do, but do I really need to know that you are having a ham sandwich for lunch. Just sayin.
Anyhoo, back to Pinterest, the other day I was trying to think of something clever or inspirational to write on the chalkboard in my kitchen. I remembered re-pinning some wordy inspiration, so I went there to find a phrase. I decided on one I liked and began to write it on my wall. It didn't take me long to realize I'd never get effect I wanted free hand. I loved the subway sign style of the original. Hey, this would be a great way to use my Silhouette. I could have cut it in vinyl, but I really wanted it to be written in chalk. So I cut a stencil with some contact paper left over from another project.
I used a chalk pen to fill in the letters.
If you want to see my pins, you can click the link over there in the right sidebar.
On the topic of links, see the one with all the pretty faces, that says join this site- if you are a subscriber of my blog through google reader, would you do me a favor and click that? It may be a bit silly. OK, it is silly, but it's something that's been bothering me for a while. I've been at this blogging thing for quite a while, five years, and I've made lots of friends. According to google reader, I have more than 6,400 subscribers. I'd just love it if that silly little widget had a lot more of your smiling faces on it.
I'll be linking at some fun parties. Check em out!
How did you get the link button for Pinterest? I'd love to have one for my blog.

I love Pinterest. I used it to round up all of the 2011 calendars that I liked that I saw on blogs, etsy and the internet, so that I could browse through them when the time came to buy one. By the way, I just got a Silhouette yesterday (yay) and I had no idea you could use contact paper! That completely opens up my horizons! I need to do something tonight!

You are going to love your new toy. The contact paper was not as easy to work with as vinyl, but I didnt want to waste the good stuff just to make a stencil.
My friend Kelli used some silver contact paper to make a design for here daughters laptop and said it looked really cool.

Funny, i just joined Pinterest today. I think it will be great. Your chalkboard is awesome! I haven't heard of a chalk pen before. Thanks for sharing!

You will love Pinterest, Jenn.
The chalk pens are so much easier to work with than chalk. You get the look of chalk, but you need a wet cloth to wipe it off, so it doesnt smear and is like writing with a marker.

You are welcome Kim. I love sharing great things ; ) You will love pinning!

Cool idea!!! I got my silhouette just before Christmas and love it so far. I tried a stencil out of cardstock that worked but not real well. Do you have tips on how to use the contact paper in it? Such a great idea and soo inexpensive! :-)
Posted by: Kathi | January 16, 2011 at 10:23 AM
Thanks Kathi. I just cut the contact paper down to 9 inches wide, and loaded it into the machine just like the silhouette vinyl. It didnt cut as evenly as the regular vinyl. One side cut deeper than the other, but it worked out fine to use as a stencil.
I havent tried card stock, but my friend Kelli did. She didnt like the way it cut, said the edges were rough. She tried again and selected double cut- this improved the cut, but it was still not completely clean.
