I've reached that milestone when you find yourself at the mall, in the trendy stores and you can't find a thing you want to spend your money on.
Mitch gave me a gift card for Christmas so I could buy myself some jeans. Oh joy. I get to go shopping for jeans. Another sign of being old. If I weren't old, that would have delighted me to no end. Instead it felt like he had given me a gift card to go out and be tortured. Thanks honey, just what I wanted, frustration and disappointment all wrapped up with a pretty bow. In his defense, I had been whining about having nothing to wear, so he did do good, even if it meant I was going to have to brave the dreaded fitting room mirror to cash in. I suffer the same fate and so many women, be they tall or short, curvy or bony, I can never find jeans that fit. Jeans that fit, but also look good. Jeans that fit and look good and are also comfortable. Fit, look good, comfortable and don't cost as much as a small car. Too much to ask? Yea, I thought so.
On Sunday, he and I ventured out to the mall. I poured through the racks, starting in the clearance section. Hey, I wanted to make the most of my gift card. I've recently gained about 15 pounds, for me, that's a good thing. I wasn't sure what size to get so I grabbed up several pair and went to the fitting room. I went through several definitely not's, a few maybe's and finally found a pair I felt pretty good about. The rise was good, not way too low and not mom jeans. The length was good but most importantly, the butt was not bad. Alrighty, I ventured out of the fitting room to show Mitch. Pretty sure I was looking kinda cute in my nicely fitting jeans, I walk past the 20-something, perky little associate who asks, you want me to get those for you in another size? I looked at her a little puzzled. What? Was she talking to me? Ahem, they don't fit, I asked. And she said, well, duh, granny. OK, she didn't actually say duh or granny, but the look on her face said it all. Then she so gently explained how they shouldn't loose here or baggy there. (She was talking about the jeans not my butt, by the way). I was getting a jeans fitting lesson in a store I'm probably too old to be shopping in in the first place.
So what's a granny to do? Rock the skin-tight skinny jeans? Not a chance. Truth is, I have to wear what feels good to me, even if it means I'm not on the cutting edge of the latest trend. Which is apparently skin-tight skinny jeans. The helpful little sales girl could tell me all day long how they were supposed to fit, but bottom line, if I don't feel comfortable wearing them, they'll never make it out of the closet. I ended up going with a "boyfriend" fit. Slightly relaxed, so I can be comfortable crawling around on the floor with Bayleigh, or climbing up and down a ladder painting...washing dishes, taking the dogs out...or even sitting on my behind at the computer. These are the things I'm likely to be doing in my new jeans. So if I'm not keeping up with the latest trends, that's OK. I'm sure it's just another sign I'm getting old and I'm completely OK with that.
Hi there! Just me, a nana in her boyfriend jeans.
And no, that isn't a white pumpkin you see back there, under the sewing machine. It most definitely is not fall decor that was forgotten about throughout the Christmas season and still hanging around on January 12. No, it's something else altogher. I'm just not telling what it is, cause it's none of your business. So move along. I'll be seeing you later. I have things to take care of. Things that are not forgotten about pumpkins that only get noticed when taking dorky photos of myself.
Your jeans look really cute! I've recently lost some weight (which is a good thing for me), so I can relate to the whole "fit" and "size" issue :) Speaking of feeling old - have you noticed how loud music is in retail stores these days? OMG - it really makes me feel ancient!!

Oh my gosh Sharly, you cant hear yourself think for the loud music. Whats with that? And the lighting is pretty crappy too. I end up feeling disoriented by the time its all over. Its official, Im turning into my Granny.

CUTE! I love the boyfriend fit...I have several pair. Not too tight, not too baggy...just right!

You look nothing like a granny. You are a cute little thing and those jeans are darling. So there! LOL

LOL Is it a real pumpkin or a faux pumpkin? We bought a white pumpkin BEFORE Jack was born. Put it on the kitchen counter. Months came and went and it never showed any signs of rot so I kept it around. I think he was a toddler when it finally rotted? It was 2 summers later. LOL

Your boyfriend jeans look like a great fit!! Love that term 'boyfriend jeans'. All of mine are either too tight or too loose or too short. I found some Halloween decorations as I was taking down Christmas...yes...taking down..not putting up... Well, I'm still taking down Christmas...did wreaths on windows today and candles out of windows. Still have Christmas flag up...my excuse...to cold to get out on porch to change while trying to balance on the swing...pitiful I know!!!

Ohmygoodness! You look superfantastic in your new jeans :)
And not keeping up with current trends in clothing does NOT make you old. You simply made a mature decision by chosing something that will be useful for more than one season.

If it were a pumpkin, and I already said it wasnt, it would be a real one. No signs of rot... I mean, of course there are no signs of rot, because it isnt a pumpkin, real or otherwise ; )

Not pitiful at all, Elaine. I havent even give thought to my Christmas flag. Id have to go outside to notice it and its too cold for that.

Great topic because just today I was shopping for new jeans. I just had breast reduction/lift surgery last week so I wanted a new outfit to match my new shape. Sounds weird but Christopher Banks does have some cute things! I got 2 pairs of jeans and 2 MEDIUM shirts, not the extra large I am accumstomed to :o) BTW, your jeans looks great! Amie

Ok after seeing you in this picture, you're right, 15 pound gain IS a good thing for you. Jeans look great, now go have a milkshake, ya lucky gal :)

You are adorable. I have to wear 'mom jeans' and haven't been able to shop at a mall store in years....unless you count the plus size stores...and their jeans are plain awful style wise, shape-wise and price-wise.
You're a lucky dog to be able to wear those cutie-patootie boyfriend jeans!

They look great to me! Jeans shopping is torture. This is why I wear each pair I buy until they fall apart.

First, I have a rotting pumpkin on my front porch still. I meant to toss it to the chickens and haven't yet. Now I'm not sure if it will even make it around to the back of the house. Sigh.
Anyway, I have jean issues, too. For me it's the long legs. It seems designers don't make a lot of clothes for tall, thin people. I promised myself in 2008 that I was going to get a good pair of jeans THAT fit, no matter the cost. It's now 2010 and I have never even looked for them. It's just too depressing. (Although I found some halfway decent jeans at Old Navy called "The Flirt." I want skinny jeans for my boots but they are never in stock.)

Oh how I know what you mean about wearing a pair till they fall apart. Thats why I finally ventured out, the only pair I had that I could wear, were beginning to be unfit to wear in public.

Thank you Clisty, I just made some cookies ; )
Posted by: Autum | January 12, 2010 at 06:48 PM
Thanks Amie, and congratulations on your surgery! I could really use a lift myself, but thats a different post, altogether ; )
Posted by: Autum | January 12, 2010 at 06:53 PM
Ohmygoodness, thank you Judi!!! I sure do hope they last more than one season, I hate going to the mall ; )
Posted by: Autum | January 12, 2010 at 06:54 PM
My thoughts exactly MaryBeth! Just right : )
Posted by: Autum | January 12, 2010 at 06:57 PM
Autum, according to my estimation you are all of 41?
The jeans look great, you totally rock the boyfriend cut.

Oh! I'm so jealous! Those jeans are too cute on you! I want some boyfriend jeans. I unfortunately am built like a giant pear and can't seem to find anything that I like on my behind.
I have decided I need to have a special drawer for out of season holiday decorations that didn't get put up with the rest of the decorations. I found 3 different Christmas ornaments today that weren't put up. I'm too lazy to go all the way to the attic and find the box. Oh well!

you look adorable in your new jeans and top - don't worry about feeling "old" ... cause you certainly don't look it!

These kinda look like jeans from American Eagle?? If not you should def. try the boyfriend jeans from there...I love them!!! AE jeans will make your butt look good too.

You look great in your jeans! - and I know what you mean about dreading the shopping for them. It seems like you can never find the "right" pair! Oh, and we still have some Christmas decorations around . . .
Posted by: Laney | January 12, 2010 at 09:06 PM
I think they look great. I too, got jeans for christmas... luckily I also got my mom and sister to shop for them with me! It took us about a dozen stores and giving up and going to the men's section to find them! I'm maybe the only 25yr old who doesn't want to look like her jeans are painted on. I went with the "trendy" looking men's pants... surprisingly they fit quite well... no clue what kind of guy wears jeans that fit this snug! lol I guess I got the real "boyfriend" jeans! :)
