I'm sure that thought has run through the minds of my next door neighbors. At least once. It seems every time I'm out there spray painting, either Ronald or Loretta will be outside and see me. Dang it, busted again! I'm sure they shake their heads and get that look, you know the one, half pity, half disgust. There she is again with that spay paint. She needs to get herself into a program. Go to some meetings. Get herself together, for the family's sake. It's a disease, I tell you and if you have the disease, one can is never enough.
Here's the ugly proof~
I have deep cabinet in the garage, three shelves high, stacked and spilling over with paint and painting paraphernalia.
Can you see how deep it is? Five or six cans deep. It's a cluttered, unorganized mess and I'm not proud.
I just can't help myself.
I've been on a binge this week. Today's victim, door knobs.
All the door hardware in our house is was brass. About a year ago I painted most of the interior knobs using Rustoleum Hammered paint in black. It's held up beautifully.
I finally got around to painting the exterior doors in the kitchen. This time I'm using oil rubbed bronze.
I really like the look and now need to repaint the others to match. See, I can always find something to paint. It's an illness.
I have a question about hinges. I painted the knobs, but the hinges remain brass. That really bugs me, but I worried about paint sticking, since hinges have oil in them. I know sometimes people paint right over their hinges when they paint doors, how does it hold up?
I have found that cleaning the hinges, painting and then re-applying oil works the best. More work. Lasts longer. ~Kelly

Before you painted your door knobs what, if anything, did you do to prepare them. I wanted to replace mine, but now I might just paint them. Who knew!!!!!

Same question as above! What do I need to do to prepare them for painting. I hate my brass knobs....I'm so glad that there is hope for them now!

The first suggestion for hinges is probably best, I've lived in many houses where they just painted over the hinges every time they painted the doors and they looked terrible:(

I never thought to spray paint my knobs! Everything on our front door is oil rubbed bronze except for the door handle. I think I'll go get a can of paint and give it a try! Thanks!

I've never seen a problem with painted hinges unless they have been painted too often and are overloaded with paint. The oiled sections wouldn't be affected by where the paint goes.

My hinges were painted when we moved in to our house. So far we have had no issues with them except the occasional squeek but a little WD40 will fix that.

It might be easiest to remove the hinge pin from the hinges (i assume you'll be taking off the doors and/or hinges) and only paint the top (that will be showing). That way, even if you paint the hinge pieces and everything, you have the same sized pin and can easily hammer it back into place and have your hinges not affected by the paint at all. If you're taking off hinges and painting them off of the door and jambs, I'd say make sure you take note of what part of the door they come from. Coz boy, I've had terrible times matching up hinges and hinge pins after the fact.

Autum,
I don't have an answer about the hinges, but I'm loving the new hardware.
Silly me... I always thought the Mitch was the one who would paint the hardware whenever you updated a cabinet or lamp or whatever. That's an awesome collection of spray paint. Never mind the neighbors!
You keep on going and please, please keep posting. You offer encouragement to us gals who fear they'll 'mess it up' if they paint.
Peace.

Don't know about painted hinges...except that if not done 'right' what ever that is...they don't work too well...if you run out of things to pain...you can always come to my house;)

My brother just redecorated my kitchen for me. He spray painted my hinges and they turned out great.
First he used Acetone to clean them, then spray painted them w/ a primer and then sprayed on 2 coats of paint.
They turned out great and no sticking

OMG I have that much paint too! And some of the same colors! I am always painting furniture, isn't that what it is for?

Ohhhh Autum you have given me some good ideas!!!! Its those little touches that really make a room, yah know?!
I have painted ove the hinges and it seems to hold up just fine providing that I have cleaned them before hand.

I'd love to know how this holds up! We have brass (shudder....ugh) door knobs all over our entire house. I would LOVE to paint them!

Have you had any trouble with the paint eventually rubbing off or is there a technique to prevent this.
