I need to order the fabric to reupholster the sofas and for some reason am completely stuck in my tracks. I'm not usually so indecisive but I can not make up my mind. What do you think? Lets call them 1, 2, and 3 from left to right. Give me your opinion, please....
**Update**
Thanks!! I knew I could count on you guys. And the winner is.......
Number 1. OK, if you read the comments you're probably thinking that one didn't get the most votes, in fact it probably got the least votes. I bet you're saying what my husband says why ask my opinion if you're not going to listen? I'll explain my reasoning. All three swatches look lighter in the picture than in real life. In fact # 1 is actually as dark as # 2 looks in the picture but is not as red. # 3 is beautiful in the picture and was my original choice before I ordered the swatches. It is is a pretty fabric but it's on the flat side, not as rich looking as is comes across on screen and though it looks very soft, it isn't. Some of you expressed concerns about the looseness of the weave of # 1. The actual weave is more along the line of a corduroy. It isn't really loose and it's a heavier fabric than the other two. For those reasons # 1 is the winner. I was very close to going with # 2 but the fact that it has so much red in it was the deal breaker. I've lived with a red couch as long as I care to. I don't want anything that even resembles red.
The lesson here is don't order 25 yards of fabric based on a picuture on the computer, a mistake I nearly made last week. I have no patience and was so eager to get the couches covered. Some rare bit of rationality came over me and I ordered samples instead. I don't want to discourage anyone from ordering fabric online, I do it all the time and have rarely been disapointed so this came as a surprise. My main reason for ordering the samples was to feel the texture, I would never have predicted such a difference in the colors.
Speaking of color, my kitchen and sewing room (the room formerly know as the dining room) look like... I don't know what they look like, nothing good. Painting begins tomorrow and I'm in the middle of clearing. It has to get bad before it gets better... right?
I vote for the middle sample photo. Based on photo evidence only, my reasoning is that the first photo on the left seems fraught with possible snags and subsequent tears due to the weave appearing not as tight as the other two photos. The photo on the right seems too dark and would show lint and other assorted things too easily. The middle photo seems the right weave and color.
P.S. I feel like Baby Bear: "...the [one] in the middle is JUSSSSST right."

I vote number three. Looks cozy.

I like 2 and 3. I'm generally anti-texture on sofas (both aesthetically and because stuff gets stuck in and on the texture, including pet hair) and #1 looks a little too textured for me.
I like the warmer, lighter brown because of its versatility. If you have a room with good light and a light or medium colored floor, then #3 would probably be good too.
It's like milk vs. dark chocolate -- I don't want to have to pick just one!

I'm lovin' #2. They will all look great, though. Not too dark to pick up pet hair, but not too light to pick up pet stains. :o)

I am going for #3...just looks warm to me.

#2

Welll, I happen to have number 1 on my sofa currently. It is wearing VERY well and it isn't too bad with the cat hair (we have 3 long haired white cats and one rambunctious toddler). So, I vote for number 1.

I'm a fan of #2. It seems dark enough to cover stains and flaws well, but it's not so dark that it would be drab.

I vote #3! It looks soft and comfy while at the same time dark enough that it could hide stains.

i like #1, but i think a darker will look better in your room. i wouldn't go as dark as #3 if you're worried about hair/stains.

number 3 for me.

I like #2. If you have pets (CATS) with nails they will make mincemeat out of a fabric with the loosest weave. I learned that lesson the hard way with a Chenille.

I just looked at your living room pictures and I am thinking the lighter fabric #1 because of the following:(*I am going by what I see on my screen, it could be totally different in real life)
You have a lot of dark furniture and adding another dark or two dark couches just would make it boring. I was looking at your area rug and thinking the #1 would pick up on the lighter warm caramel colours in it. Even if you could go lighter with the couches. It is hard to tell, but something similar to the light colours in the area rug.
You also said before that you didn't like the living room because it was so dark. Adding two dark couches would just make it that much more.
Going with the lighter fabric would make a nice contrast to the room with the dark furniture, frames, etc. Plus it is a nice neutral so that your pillows would look great against it.
Anyway, that is my opinion. Hope that helps.

I prefer 3 ;) It seems chocolate lol

Okay...after careful scientific (hee hee) consideration without seeing the location of said couch.
I would choose the middle one. The texture of the first one is throwing me as others have mentioned. Or maybe it is because it is going in a different direction and I'm discriminating.
I do LOVE the chocolate"y" goodness of the third one, but knowing you have pets I would be concerned about the hair.
So yeah...um... #2. :o)

number 2
I think that it would be easier to match other colors with.

I like #2 also. Don't forget to either apply Scoth Guard yourself or have the upholster apply it or something similar. Note: with Scotch Guard you do have to reapply when you clean a spot.

Huh. So how's this for indecisive? I like all three. I'd probably go with #3 though because chocolate brown is so "in" right now. Good eye, regardless of your choice!

#2, a nice medium brown..not so dark that it will show every little cat hair and not so light that it will show the crud that inevitably gets on sofas.

I would go with number 1 it's a lovely shade and just dark enough to not show every little mark up!

2!

You have pets, right? I would choose based on best dog hair camoflage option....we have leather for that very reason!
Posted by: Shelly | December 04, 2006 at 04:21 PM
I vote 2. Three is good too, but it might show everything...dog hair, dust, fuzz, threads...because it looks really dark. ;)

We used to have a couch that had fabric similar to #1. With all the animals and kids it didn't hold up as long as I thought it should. The weave is too loose as many have stated.
We currently have furniture in the dark chocolate (except it's leather) and the animal hairs do show up and it does make the room dark. So if you don't want your room too dark and you don't want too much animal hair showing I would go with #2. But they are all beautiful choices!
Can't wait to see pics when your done with everything!
And by the way, DH is taking time off right after Christmas to paint the outside of the house so you aren't the only one painting amongst all the holiday bustle. :)
